Deuteronomy 6:6-16

New International Version

⁶These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.^(A) ⁷Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^(B) ⁸Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.^(C) ⁹Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.^(D)

¹⁰When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,^(E) ¹¹houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,^(F) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,^(G) ¹²be careful that you do not forget^(H) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

¹³Fear the Lord^(I) your God, serve him only^(J) and take your oaths^(K) in his name.^(L) ¹⁴Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; ¹⁵for the Lord your God^(M), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. ¹⁶Do not put the Lord your God to the test^(N) as you did at Massah.

⁷And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

⁸And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

⁹And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

¹⁰And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

¹¹And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

¹²Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

¹³Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

¹⁴Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

¹⁵(For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

¹⁶Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

¹⁰“So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He ^[a]swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities ^(E)which you did not build, ¹¹houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—^(F)when you have eaten and are full— ¹²then beware, lest you forget the ^(G)Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. ¹³You shall ^(H)fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and ^(I)shall take oaths in His name. ¹⁴You shall not go after other gods, ^(J)the gods of the peoples who are all around you ¹⁵(for ^(K)the Lord your God is a jealous God ^(L)among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.
