²⁹Isaiah had foretold previously:

“If the Lord of hosts
had not left us any descendants,
we would have become like Sodom
and been made like Gomorrah.”

³⁰A Misguided Zeal. What then shall we say? That the Gentiles who did not strive for righteousness have achieved it, that is, righteousness based on faith, ³¹but that Israel, who did strive for righteousness based on the Law, did not succeed in attaining it?

²⁹It is just as Isaiah said previously:

“Unless the Lord Almighty^(A)
had left us descendants,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.”^[a]^(B)

Israel’s Unbelief

³⁰What then shall we say?^(C) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;^(D) ³¹but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,^(E) have not attained their goal.^(F)
