Psalm 132(A)

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
    and all his self-denial.(B)

He swore an oath to the Lord,
    he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(C)
“I will not enter my house(D)
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place(E) for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

We heard it in Ephrathah,(F)
    we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[a](G)
“Let us go to his dwelling place,(H)
    let us worship at his footstool,(I) saying,
‘Arise, Lord,(J) and come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your might.
May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(K)
    may your faithful people(L) sing for joy.’”

10 For the sake of your servant David,
    do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(M)
    a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(N)
    I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(O)
    and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
    on your throne(P) for ever and ever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(Q)
    he has desired it for his dwelling,(R) saying,
14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever;(S)
    here I will sit enthroned,(T) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
    her poor I will satisfy with food.(U)
16 I will clothe her priests(V) with salvation,
    and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(W)

17 “Here I will make a horn[b] grow(X) for David
    and set up a lamp(Y) for my anointed one.(Z)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(AA)
    but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(AB)

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together(AC) in unity!(AD)

It is like precious oil poured on the head,(AE)
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
    down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew(AF) of Hermon(AG)
    were falling on Mount Zion.(AH)
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,(AI)
    even life forevermore.(AJ)

Psalm 134

A song of ascents.

Praise the Lord, all you servants(AK) of the Lord
    who minister(AL) by night(AM) in the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands(AN) in the sanctuary(AO)
    and praise the Lord.(AP)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,(AQ)
    he who is the Maker of heaven(AR) and earth.

Psalm 135(AS)

    sing praise to his name,(AX) for that is pleasant.(AY)
For the Lord has chosen Jacob(AZ) to be his own,
    Israel to be his treasured possession.(BA)

I know that the Lord is great,(BB)
    that our Lord is greater than all gods.(BC)
The Lord does whatever pleases him,(BD)
    in the heavens and on the earth,(BE)
    in the seas and all their depths.
He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
    he sends lightning with the rain(BF)
    and brings out the wind(BG) from his storehouses.(BH)

He struck down the firstborn(BI) of Egypt,
    the firstborn of people and animals.
He sent his signs(BJ) and wonders into your midst, Egypt,

10 He struck down many(BL) nations
    and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon(BM) king of the Amorites,(BN)
    Og king of Bashan,(BO)
    and all the kings of Canaan(BP)
12 and he gave their land as an inheritance,(BQ)
    an inheritance to his people Israel.

13 Your name, Lord, endures forever,(BR)
    your renown,(BS) Lord, through all generations.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people(BT)
    and have compassion on his servants.(BU)

15 The idols of the nations(BV) are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.(BW)
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,(BX)
    eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears, but cannot hear,
    nor is there breath(BY) in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will be like them,
    and so will all who trust in them.

19 All you Israelites, praise the Lord;(BZ)
    house of Aaron, praise the Lord;
20 house of Levi, praise the Lord;
    you who fear him, praise the Lord.
21 Praise be to the Lord from Zion,(CA)
    to him who dwells in Jerusalem.(CB)

Praise the Lord.

who made the great lights(CO)
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern(CP) the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

10 to him who struck down the firstborn(CQ) of Egypt
His love endures forever.

His love endures forever.
12 with a mighty hand(CS) and outstretched arm;(CT)
His love endures forever.

13 to him who divided the Red Sea[d](CU) asunder

His love endures forever.
22 an inheritance(DE) to his servant Israel.(DF)
His love endures forever.

23 He remembered us(DG) in our low estate
His love endures forever.
24 and freed us(DH) from our enemies.(DI)
His love endures forever.
25 He gives food(DJ) to every creature.
His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks(DK) to the God of heaven.(DL)
His love endures forever.(DM)

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon(DN) we sat and wept(DO)
    when we remembered Zion.(DP)
There on the poplars(DQ)
    we hung our harps,(DR)
for there our captors(DS) asked us for songs,
    our tormentors demanded(DT) songs of joy;
    they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”(DU)

How can we sing the songs of the Lord(DV)
    while in a foreign land?
If I forget you,(DW) Jerusalem,
    may my right hand forget its skill.
May my tongue cling to the roof(DX) of my mouth
    if I do not remember(DY) you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem(DZ)
    my highest joy.

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites(EA) did
    on the day Jerusalem fell.(EB)
“Tear it down,” they cried,
    “tear it down to its foundations!”(EC)
Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,(ED)
    happy is the one who repays you
    according to what you have done to us.
Happy is the one who seizes your infants
    and dashes them(EE) against the rocks.

Psalm 138

Of David.

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
    before the “gods”(EF) I will sing(EG) your praise.
I will bow down toward your holy temple(EH)
    and will praise your name(EI)
    for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,(EJ)
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
    that it surpasses your fame.(EK)
When I called,(EL) you answered me;(EM)
    you greatly emboldened(EN) me.

May all the kings of the earth(EO) praise you, Lord,
    when they hear what you have decreed.
May they sing(EP) of the ways of the Lord,
    for the glory of the Lord(EQ) is great.

Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;(ER)
    though lofty, he sees them(ES) from afar.
Though I walk(ET) in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve my life.(EU)
You stretch out your hand(EV) against the anger of my foes;(EW)
    with your right hand(EX) you save me.(EY)
The Lord will vindicate(EZ) me;
    your love, Lord, endures forever(FA)
    do not abandon(FB) the works of your hands.(FC)

Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

You have searched me,(FD) Lord,
    and you know(FE) me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;(FF)
    you perceive my thoughts(FG) from afar.
You discern my going out(FH) and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.(FI)
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.(FJ)
You hem me in(FK) behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,(FL)
    too lofty(FM) for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee(FN) from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens,(FO) you are there;
    if I make my bed(FP) in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,(FQ)
    your right hand(FR) will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark(FS) to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;(FT)
    you knit me together(FU) in my mother’s womb.(FV)
14 I praise you(FW) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,(FX)
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made(FY) in the secret place,
    when I was woven together(FZ) in the depths of the earth.(GA)
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained(GB) for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[e](GC) God!(GD)
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,(GE)
    they would outnumber the grains of sand(GF)
    when I awake,(GG) I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!(GH)
    Away from me,(GI) you who are bloodthirsty!(GJ)
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
    your adversaries(GK) misuse your name.(GL)
21 Do I not hate those(GM) who hate you, Lord,
    and abhor(GN) those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
    I count them my enemies.(GO)
23 Search me,(GP) God, and know my heart;(GQ)
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way(GR) in me,
    and lead me(GS) in the way everlasting.

Psalm 140[f]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Rescue me,(GT) Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from the violent,(GU)
who devise evil plans(GV) in their hearts
    and stir up war(GW) every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as(GX) a serpent’s;
    the poison of vipers(GY) is on their lips.[g]

Keep me safe,(GZ) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;(HA)
    protect me from the violent,
    who devise ways to trip my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a snare(HB) for me;
    they have spread out the cords of their net(HC)
    and have set traps(HD) for me along my path.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”(HE)
    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.(HF)
Sovereign Lord,(HG) my strong deliverer,
    you shield my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant the wicked(HH) their desires, Lord;
    do not let their plans succeed.

Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
    may the mischief of their lips engulf them.(HI)
10 May burning coals fall on them;
    may they be thrown into the fire,(HJ)
    into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;
    may disaster hunt down the violent.(HK)

12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor(HL)
    and upholds the cause(HM) of the needy.(HN)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,(HO)
    and the upright will live(HP) in your presence.(HQ)

132 Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions:

How he sware unto the Lord, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,

Until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.

Arise, O Lord, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.

10 For thy servant David's sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

11 The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

13 For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.

14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18 His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

134 Behold, bless ye the Lord, all ye servants of the Lord, which by night stand in the house of the Lord.

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.

The Lord that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.

135 Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the name of the Lord; praise him, O ye servants of the Lord.

Ye that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.

Praise the Lord; for the Lord is good: sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.

For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel for his peculiar treasure.

For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.

Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.

He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.

Who smote the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast.

Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.

10 Who smote great nations, and slew mighty kings;

11 Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan:

12 And gave their land for an heritage, an heritage unto Israel his people.

13 Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.

14 For the Lord will judge his people, and he will repent himself concerning his servants.

15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;

17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths.

18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.

19 Bless the Lord, O house of Israel: bless the Lord, O house of Aaron:

20 Bless the Lord, O house of Levi: ye that fear the Lord, bless the Lord.

21 Blessed be the Lord out of Zion, which dwelleth at Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord.

136 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:

The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:

The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.

10 To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever:

11 And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever:

12 With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.

13 To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever:

14 And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever:

15 But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever.

16 To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.

17 To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:

18 And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:

19 Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:

20 And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:

21 And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:

22 Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever.

23 Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever:

24 And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever.

25 Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.

26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.

137 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

138 I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth.

Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord.

Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

139 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

21 Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

140 Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

The Eternal Dwelling of God in Zion

A Song of Ascents.

132 Lord, remember David
And all his afflictions;
How he swore to the Lord,
(A)And vowed to (B)the Mighty One of Jacob:
“Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house,
Or go up to the comfort of my bed;
I will (C)not give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I (D)find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it (E)in Ephrathah;
(F)We found it (G)in the fields of [a]the woods.
Let us go into His tabernacle;
(H)Let us worship at His footstool.
(I)Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place,
You and (J)the ark of Your strength.
Let Your priests (K)be clothed with righteousness,
And let Your saints shout for joy.

10 For Your servant David’s sake,
Do not turn away the face of Your [b]Anointed.

11 (L)The Lord has sworn in truth to David;
He will not turn from it:
“I will set upon your throne (M)the [c]fruit of your body.
12 If your sons will keep My covenant
And My testimony which I shall teach them,
Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.”

13 (N)For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His [d]dwelling place:
14 “This(O) is My resting place forever;
Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 (P)I will abundantly bless her [e]provision;
I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 (Q)I will also clothe her priests with salvation,
(R)And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
17 (S)There I will make the [f]horn of David grow;
(T)I will prepare a lamp for My [g]Anointed.
18 His enemies I will (U)clothe with shame,
But upon Himself His crown shall flourish.”

Blessed Unity of the People of God

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For (V)brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.
It is like the dew of (W)Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion;
For (X)there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore.

Praising the Lord in His House at Night

A Song of Ascents.

134 Behold, bless the Lord,
All you servants of the Lord,
Who by night stand in the house of the Lord!
(Y)Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
And bless the Lord.

The Lord who made heaven and earth
Bless you from Zion!

Praise to God in Creation and Redemption

135 Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord;
(Z)Praise Him, O you servants of the Lord!
(AA)You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In (AB)the courts of the house of our God,
Praise the Lord, for (AC)the Lord is good;
Sing praises to His name, (AD)for it is pleasant.
For (AE)the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His [h]special treasure.

For I know that (AF)the Lord is great,
And our Lord is above all gods.
(AG)Whatever the Lord pleases He does,
In heaven and in earth,
In the seas and in all deep places.
(AH)He causes the [i]vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
(AI)He makes lightning for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His (AJ)treasuries.

(AK)He [j]destroyed the firstborn of Egypt,
[k]Both of man and beast.
(AL)He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt,
(AM)Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 (AN)He defeated many nations
And slew mighty kings—
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
And (AO)all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 (AP)And gave their land as a [l]heritage,
A heritage to Israel His people.

13 (AQ)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
Your fame, O Lord, throughout all generations.
14 (AR)For the Lord will judge His people,
And He will have compassion on His servants.

15 (AS)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear;
Nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

19 (AT)Bless the Lord, O house of Israel!
Bless the Lord, O house of Aaron!
20 Bless the Lord, O house of Levi!
You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (AU)out of Zion,
Who dwells in Jerusalem!

Praise the Lord!

Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy

136 Oh, (AV)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
(AW)For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to (AX)the God of gods!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
For His mercy endures forever:

To Him (AY)who alone does great wonders,
For His mercy endures forever;
(AZ)To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
For His mercy endures forever;
(BA)To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
For His mercy endures forever;
(BB)To Him who made great lights,
For His mercy endures forever—
(BC)The sun to rule by day,
For His mercy endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His mercy endures forever.

10 (BD)To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn,
For His mercy endures forever;
11 (BE)And brought out Israel from among them,
For His mercy endures forever;
12 (BF)With a strong hand, and with [m]an outstretched arm,
For His mercy endures forever;
13 (BG)To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
For His mercy endures forever;
14 And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His mercy endures forever;
15 (BH)But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
For His mercy endures forever;
16 (BI)To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His mercy endures forever;
17 (BJ)To Him who struck down great kings,
For His mercy endures forever;
18 (BK)And slew famous kings,
For His mercy endures forever—
19 (BL)Sihon king of the Amorites,
For His mercy endures forever;
20 (BM)And Og king of Bashan,
For His mercy endures forever—
21 (BN)And gave their land as a [n]heritage,
For His mercy endures forever;
22 A heritage to Israel His servant,
For His mercy endures forever.

23 Who (BO)remembered us in our lowly state,
For His mercy endures forever;
24 And (BP)rescued us from our enemies,
For His mercy endures forever;
25 (BQ)Who gives food to all flesh,
For His mercy endures forever.

26 Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.

Longing for Zion in a Foreign Land

137 By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down, yea, we wept
When we remembered Zion.
We hung our harps
Upon the willows in the midst of it.
For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song,
And those who (BR)plundered us requested mirth,
Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

How shall we sing the Lord’s song
In a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget its skill!
If I do not remember you,
Let my (BS)tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—
If I do not exalt Jerusalem
Above my chief joy.

Remember, O Lord, against (BT)the sons of Edom
The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, [o]“Raze it, raze it,
To its very foundation!”

O daughter of Babylon, (BU)who are to be destroyed,
Happy the one (BV)who repays you as you have served us!
Happy the one who takes and (BW)dashes
Your little ones against the rock!

The Lord’s Goodness to the Faithful

A Psalm of David.

138 I will praise You with my whole heart;
(BX)Before the gods I will sing praises to You.
(BY)I will worship (BZ)toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name
For Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have (CA)magnified Your word above all Your name.
In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul.

(CB)All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.
Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
(CC)Though the Lord is on high,
Yet (CD)He regards the lowly;
But the proud He knows from afar.

(CE)Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand
Against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
(CF)The Lord will [p]perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever;
(CG)Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

God’s Perfect Knowledge of Man

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, (CH)You have searched me and known me.
(CI)You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You (CJ)understand my thought afar off.
(CK)You [q]comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, (CL)You know it altogether.
You have [r]hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
(CM)Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.

(CN)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
(CO)If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
(CP)If I make my bed in [s]hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall [t]fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12 Indeed, (CQ)the darkness [u]shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

13 For You formed my inward parts;
You [v]covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for [w]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 (CR)My [x]frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

17 (CS)How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.

19 Oh, that You would (CT)slay the wicked, O God!
(CU)Depart from me, therefore, you [y]bloodthirsty men.
20 For they (CV)speak against You wickedly;
[z]Your enemies take Your name in vain.
21 (CW)Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
22 I hate them with [aa]perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.

23 (CX)Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And (CY)lead me in the way everlasting.

Prayer for Deliverance from Evil Men

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

140 Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men;
Preserve me from violent men,
Who plan evil things in their hearts;
(CZ)They continually gather together for war.
They sharpen their tongues like a serpent;
The (DA)poison of asps is under their lips. Selah

(DB)Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
Preserve me from violent men,
Who have purposed to make my steps stumble.
The proud have hidden a (DC)snare for me, and cords;
They have spread a net by the wayside;
They have set traps for me. Selah

I said to the Lord: “You are my God;
Hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.
O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation,
You have [ab]covered my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
Do not further his wicked scheme,
(DD)Lest they be exalted. Selah

As for the head of those who surround me,
Let the evil of their lips cover them;
10 (DE)Let burning coals fall upon them;
Let them be cast into the fire,
Into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
11 Let not a slanderer be established in the earth;
Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12 I know that the Lord will (DF)maintain
The cause of the afflicted,
And justice for the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name;
The upright shall dwell in Your presence.
