20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the [a]purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (A)And they *compelled a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (B)Rufus), to carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (C)Then they *brought Him to the place (D)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (E)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(F)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [b]lots for them to decide [c]what each man would take. 25 Now it was the [d](G)third hour [e]when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him [f]read, “(H)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two [g]rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.[h] 29 Those passing by were [i]hurling abuse at Him, (I)shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (J)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(K)He saved others; [j]He cannot save Himself! 32 Let this Christ, (L)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (M)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (N)When the [k](O)sixth hour came, darkness [l]fell over the whole land until the [m](P)ninth hour. 34 At the [n](Q)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (R)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[o]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 (S)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [p]died. 38 (T)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (U)And when the centurion, who was standing [q]right in front of Him, saw that He [r]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was [s]the Son of God!”

40 (V)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of [t]James (W)the [u]Less and Joses, and (X)Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and (Y)serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(B)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(C) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(D) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(E) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(F) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(G) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(H)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(I) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(J) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(K) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(L) this king of Israel,(M) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(N)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(O) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](P)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(Q) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(R)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(S) 39 And when the centurion,(T) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(U)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(V) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(W) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(X)

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, The King Of The Jews.

27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
