When any of you present an offering to the Lord, when it is from the livestock, you may present your offering from the herd or the flock.

- Leviticus 1:3 This offering (the ‘olah, that which goes up) was completely burned up on the altar. It is, therefore, called the whole burnt offering to distinguish it from the other sacrifices, which were only partially burned on the altar. The full name, the whole burnt offering, is sometimes abbreviated to the burnt offering.
