8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves[a] and two fish; but what good are these for so many?”(A) 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass[b] in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.(B)

- 6:9 Barley loaves: the food of the poor. There seems an allusion to the story of Elisha multiplying the barley bread in 2 Kgs 4:42–44.
- 6:10 Grass: implies springtime, and therefore Passover. Five thousand: so Mk 6:39, 44 and parallels.

8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(A) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(B)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
