And Have You Forgotten That God Disciplines Those He Loves?

And have[a] you completely-forgotten[b] the exhortation which speaks[c] to you as sons?: “My son, do not be thinking-lightly[d] of the discipline[e] of the Lord, nor losing-heart while being rebuked by Him. For the one whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He whips[f] every son whom He accepts” [Prov 3:11-12].

God Is Dealing With You As Sons

You are enduring[g] [your trials] for discipline; God is dealing with you as with sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
    and do not lose heart(A) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(B)
    and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](C)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(D) For what children are not disciplined by their father?
