3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey, but I won’t go up among you, because you are an obstinate[a] people, and otherwise I might consume you along the way.”
4 When the people heard this troubling word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 The Lord had told Moses, “Say to the Israelis, ‘You are an obstinate people,[b] and if for one moment I went up among you, I would put an end to you. Now take off your ornaments so I may decide[c] what to do with you.’”

3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey.(A) But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked(B) people and I might destroy(C) you on the way.”
4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn(D) and no one put on any ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people.(E) If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy(F) you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.’”
