  1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
  2. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
  3. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
  4. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

  9. But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
  10. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
  11. For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.
  12. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
  13. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
  14. And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
  15. And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
  16. But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
  17. For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.
  18. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.
  19. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:
  20. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
  21. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;
  22. And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
  23. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
  24. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.
  25. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
