¹² For the Lord of armies will have a day of reckoning
Against ^(A)everyone who is arrogant and haughty,
And against everyone who is lifted up,
That he may be brought low.
¹³ And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up,
Against all the ^(B)oaks of Bashan,
¹⁴ Against all the ^(C)lofty mountains,
Against all the hills that are lifted up,
¹⁵ Against every ^(D)high tower,
Against every fortified wall,
¹⁶ Against all the ^(E)ships of Tarshish
And against all the delightful ships.
¹⁷ And the pride of humanity will be humbled
And the arrogance of people will be brought low;
And the Lord alone will be exalted on that day,
¹⁸ And the ^(F)idols will completely vanish.
¹⁹ People will ^(G)go into caves of the rocks
And into holes in the ^[a]ground
Away from the terror of the Lord
And the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises ^(H)to terrify the earth.
²⁰ On that day people will ^(I)throw away to the moles and the ^(J)bats
Their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
Which they made for themselves to worship,
²¹ In order to ^(K)go into the clefts of the rocks and the crannies of the cliffs
Before the terror of the Lord and the splendor of His majesty,
When He arises to terrify the earth.

⁹ Behold, ^(A)the day of the Lord is coming,
Cruel, with fury and burning anger,
To make the land a desolation;
And He will exterminate its sinners from it.
¹⁰ For the ^(B)stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not flash their light;
The ^(C)sun will be dark when it rises
And the moon will not shed its light.
¹¹ So I will ^(D)punish the world for its evil
And the ^(E)wicked for their wrongdoing;
I will also put an end to the ^(F)audacity of the proud
And humiliate the ^(G)arrogance of the ^[a](H)tyrants.
¹² I will make mortal man ^(I)scarcer than pure gold
And mankind than the ^(J)gold of Ophir.
¹³ Therefore I will make the ^(K)heavens tremble,
And ^(L)the earth will be shaken from its place
At the fury of the Lord of armies
In ^(M)the day of His burning anger.
¹⁴ And it will be that, like a hunted gazelle,
Or like ^(N)sheep with no one to gather them,
Each of them will turn to his own people,
And each of them will flee to his own land.
¹⁵ Anyone who is found will be ^(O)thrust through,
And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
¹⁶ Their ^(P)little ones also will be dashed to pieces
Before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives raped.

³⁰ I will ^[a](A)display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
³¹ The ^(B)sun will be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the ^(C)great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
³² And it will come about that ^(D)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
Will ^[b]be saved;
For ^(E)on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
There will be those who ^(F)escape,
Just as the Lord has said,
Even among the ^(G)survivors whom the Lord calls.

^9 (A)Proclaim this among the nations:
^(B)Prepare for holy war; ^(C)stir up the warriors!
Have all the soldiers come forward, have them come up!
^10 (D)Beat your plowshares into swords,
And your pruning hooks into spears;
^(E)Let the weak man say, “I am a warrior.”
^11 [a](F)Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations,
And gather yourselves there.
Bring down, Lord, Your ^(G)warriors.
¹² Let the nations be awakened
And come up to the ^(H)Valley of ^[b]Jehoshaphat,
For there I will sit to ^(I)judge
All the surrounding nations.
^13 (J)Put in the sickle, for the ^(K)harvest is ripe.
Come, ^(L)tread the grapes, for the ^(M)wine press is full;
The vats overflow, for their ^(N)wickedness is great.
^14 (O)Multitudes, multitudes in the ^(P)valley of ^[c]decision!
For the ^(Q)day of the Lord is near in the valley of ^[d]decision.
¹⁵ The ^(R)sun and moon have become dark,
And the stars have lost their brightness.
¹⁶ The Lord ^(S)roars from Zion
And ^(T)utters His voice from Jerusalem,
And the ^(U)heavens and the earth quake.
But the Lord is a ^(V)refuge for His people,
And a ^(W)stronghold for the sons of Israel.
¹⁷ Then you will ^(X)know that I am the Lord your God,
Dwelling on Zion, My ^(Y)holy mountain.
So Jerusalem will be ^(Z)holy,
And ^(AA)strangers will no longer pass through it.

¹⁸ And on that day
The ^(AB)mountains will drip with ^[e]sweet wine,
And the hills will ^(AC)flow with milk,
And all the ^(AD)brooks of Judah will flow with water;
And a ^(AE)spring will go out from the house of the Lord
And water the Valley of ^[f]Shittim.
¹⁹ Egypt will become a wasteland,
And Edom will become a desolate wilderness,
Because of the ^(AF)violence ^[g]done to the sons of Judah,
In whose land they have shed innocent blood.
²⁰ But Judah will be ^(AG)inhabited forever,
And Jerusalem for all generations.
²¹ And I will ^(AH)avenge their blood which I have not avenged,
For the Lord dwells in Zion.
