¹² When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.^(A) You will be a restless wanderer^(B) on the earth.^(C)”

¹³ Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. ¹⁴ Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;^(D) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,^(E) and whoever finds me will kill me.”^(F)

¹⁵ But the Lord said to him, “Not so^[a]; anyone who kills Cain^(G) will suffer vengeance^(H) seven times over.^(I)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

³⁰ “‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.^(A)

³⁶ They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs^(A) will devour Jezebel’s flesh.^[a](B)

³⁷ Jezebel’s body will be like dung^(A) on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’”

⁴ For they have forsaken^(A) me and made this a place of foreign gods^(B); they have burned incense^(C) in it to gods that neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah ever knew, and they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.^{(D) 5} They have built the high places of Baal to burn their children^(E) in the fire as offerings to Baal—something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind.^{(F) 6} So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call this place Topheth^(G) or the Valley of Ben Hinnom,^(H) but the Valley of Slaughter.^(I)

⁷ “‘In this place I will ruin^[a] the plans^(J) of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies,^(K) at the hands of those who want to kill them, and I will give their carcasses^(L) as food^(M) to the birds and the wild animals. ⁸ I will devastate this city and make it an object of horror and scorn;^(N) all who pass by will be appalled^(O) and will scoff because of all its wounds.^{(P) 9} I will make them eat^(Q) the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh because their enemies^(R) will press the siege so hard against them to destroy them.’
