⁹ Moses said to Joshua,^(A) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff^(B) of God in my hands.”

⁵ So twelve thousand men armed for battle,^(A) a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.

⁶ Moses sent them into battle,^(A) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas^(B) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary^(C) and the trumpets^(D) for signaling.

⁴ So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,^(A)

³ So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night

⁵ So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.”

⁶ Three hundred of them^(A) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
