The Need for Self-Discipline

²⁴ Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?^(A) Run^(B) in such a way as to get the prize.

¹⁶ as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ^(A) that I did not run^(B) or labor in vain.^(C)

¹¹ and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection^(A) from the dead.

¹² Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal,^(B) but I press on to take hold^(C) of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.^{(D) 13} Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind^(E) and straining toward what is ahead, ¹⁴ I press on^(F) toward the goal to win the prize^(G) for which God has called^(H) me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run^(A) with perseverance^(B) the race marked out for us,

² fixing our eyes on Jesus,^(A) the pioneer^(B) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,^(C) scorning its shame,^(D) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.^(E)
