Psalm 43[a]

Vindicate me, my God,
    and plead my cause(A)
    against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me(B) from those who are
    deceitful and wicked.(C)
You are God my stronghold.
    Why have you rejected(D) me?
Why must I go about mourning,(E)
    oppressed by the enemy?(F)
Send me your light(G) and your faithful care,(H)
    let them lead me;(I)
let them bring me to your holy mountain,(J)
    to the place where you dwell.(K)
Then I will go(L) to the altar(M) of God,
    to God, my joy(N) and my delight.(O)
I will praise you with the lyre,(P)
    O God, my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.(Q)

Psalm 44[b]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[c]

We have heard it with our ears,(R) O God;
    our ancestors have told us(S)
what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.(T)
With your hand you drove out(U) the nations
    and planted(V) our ancestors;
you crushed(W) the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.(X)
It was not by their sword(Y) that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand,(Z) your arm,(AA)
    and the light(AB) of your face, for you loved(AC) them.

You are my King(AD) and my God,(AE)
    who decrees[d] victories(AF) for Jacob.
Through you we push back(AG) our enemies;
    through your name we trample(AH) our foes.
I put no trust in my bow,(AI)
    my sword does not bring me victory;
but you give us victory(AJ) over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.(AK)
In God we make our boast(AL) all day long,(AM)
    and we will praise your name forever.[e](AN)

But now you have rejected(AO) and humbled us;(AP)
    you no longer go out with our armies.(AQ)
10 You made us retreat(AR) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered(AS) us.
11 You gave us up to be devoured like sheep(AT)
    and have scattered us among the nations.(AU)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,(AV)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

13 You have made us a reproach(AW) to our neighbors,(AX)
    the scorn(AY) and derision(AZ) of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword(BA) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads(BB) at us.
15 I live in disgrace(BC) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame(BD)
16 at the taunts(BE) of those who reproach and revile(BF) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.(BG)

17 All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten(BH) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts had not turned(BI) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you crushed(BJ) us and made us a haunt for jackals;(BK)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.(BL)

20 If we had forgotten(BM) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,(BN)
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?(BO)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep(BP) to be slaughtered.(BQ)

23 Awake,(BR) Lord! Why do you sleep?(BS)
    Rouse yourself!(BT) Do not reject us forever.(BU)
24 Why do you hide your face(BV)
    and forget(BW) our misery and oppression?(BX)

25 We are brought down to the dust;(BY)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up(BZ) and help us;
    rescue(CA) us because of your unfailing love.(CB)

Psalm 45[f]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.[g] A wedding song.(CC)

My heart is stirred by a noble theme
    as I recite my verses for the king;
    my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

You are the most excellent of men
    and your lips have been anointed with grace,(CD)
    since God has blessed you forever.(CE)

Gird your sword(CF) on your side, you mighty one;(CG)
    clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.(CH)
In your majesty ride forth victoriously(CI)
    in the cause of truth, humility and justice;(CJ)
    let your right hand(CK) achieve awesome deeds.(CL)
Let your sharp arrows(CM) pierce the hearts(CN) of the king’s enemies;(CO)
    let the nations fall beneath your feet.
Your throne, O God,[h] will last for ever and ever;(CP)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You love righteousness(CQ) and hate wickedness;(CR)
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing(CS) you with the oil of joy.(CT)
All your robes are fragrant(CU) with myrrh(CV) and aloes(CW) and cassia;(CX)
    from palaces adorned with ivory(CY)
    the music of the strings(CZ) makes you glad.
Daughters of kings(DA) are among your honored women;
    at your right hand(DB) is the royal bride(DC) in gold of Ophir.(DD)

10 Listen, daughter,(DE) and pay careful attention:(DF)
    Forget your people(DG) and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;(DH)
    honor(DI) him, for he is your lord.(DJ)
12 The city of Tyre(DK) will come with a gift,[i](DL)
    people of wealth will seek your favor.
13 All glorious(DM) is the princess within her chamber;
    her gown is interwoven with gold.(DN)
14 In embroidered garments(DO) she is led to the king;(DP)
    her virgin companions(DQ) follow her—
    those brought to be with her.
15 Led in with joy and gladness,(DR)
    they enter the palace of the king.

16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
    you will make them princes(DS) throughout the land.

17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;(DT)
    therefore the nations will praise you(DU) for ever and ever.(DV)

Psalm 46[j]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According to alamoth.[k] A song.

God is our refuge(DW) and strength,(DX)
    an ever-present(DY) help(DZ) in trouble.(EA)
Therefore we will not fear,(EB) though the earth give way(EC)
    and the mountains fall(ED) into the heart of the sea,(EE)
though its waters roar(EF) and foam(EG)
    and the mountains quake(EH) with their surging.[l]

There is a river(EI) whose streams(EJ) make glad the city of God,(EK)
    the holy place where the Most High(EL) dwells.(EM)
God is within her,(EN) she will not fall;(EO)
    God will help(EP) her at break of day.
Nations(EQ) are in uproar,(ER) kingdoms(ES) fall;
    he lifts his voice,(ET) the earth melts.(EU)

The Lord Almighty(EV) is with us;(EW)
    the God of Jacob(EX) is our fortress.(EY)

Come and see what the Lord has done,(EZ)
    the desolations(FA) he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars(FB) cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow(FC) and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields[m] with fire.(FD)
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;(FE)
    I will be exalted(FF) among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob(FG) is our fortress.(FH)

Psalm 47[n]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Clap your hands,(FI) all you nations;
    shout to God with cries of joy.(FJ)

For the Lord Most High(FK) is awesome,(FL)
    the great King(FM) over all the earth.
He subdued(FN) nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
He chose our inheritance(FO) for us,
    the pride of Jacob,(FP) whom he loved.[o]

God has ascended(FQ) amid shouts of joy,(FR)
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.(FS)
Sing praises(FT) to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;(FU)
    sing to him a psalm(FV) of praise.

God reigns(FW) over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.(FX)
The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[p] of the earth belong to God;(FY)
    he is greatly exalted.(FZ)

Psalm 48[q]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord,(GA) and most worthy of praise,(GB)
    in the city of our God,(GC) his holy mountain.(GD)

Beautiful(GE) in its loftiness,
    the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[r](GF) is Mount Zion,(GG)
    the city of the Great King.(GH)
God is in her citadels;(GI)
    he has shown himself to be her fortress.(GJ)

When the kings joined forces,
    when they advanced together,(GK)
they saw her and were astounded;
    they fled in terror.(GL)
Trembling seized(GM) them there,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(GN)
You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(GO)
    shattered by an east wind.(GP)

As we have heard,
    so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
    in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
    forever.[s](GQ)

Within your temple, O God,
    we meditate(GR) on your unfailing love.(GS)
10 Like your name,(GT) O God,
    your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;(GU)
    your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
    the villages of Judah are glad
    because of your judgments.(GV)

12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
    count her towers,(GW)
13 consider well her ramparts,(GX)
    view her citadels,(GY)
that you may tell of them
    to the next generation.(GZ)

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
    he will be our guide(HA) even to the end.

Psalm 49[t]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(HB) this, all you peoples;(HC)
    listen, all who live in this world,(HD)
both low and high,(HE)
    rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(HF)
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(HG)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(HH)
    with the harp(HI) I will expound my riddle:(HJ)

Why should I fear(HK) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(HL)
    and boast(HM) of their great riches?(HN)
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(HO) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—(HP)
so that they should live on(HQ) forever
    and not see decay.(HR)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(HS)
    that the foolish and the senseless(HT) also perish,
    leaving their wealth(HU) to others.(HV)
11 Their tombs(HW) will remain their houses[u] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,(HX)
    though they had[v] named(HY) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(HZ)
    they are like the beasts that perish.(IA)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(IB)
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[w]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(IC) to die;(ID)
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail(IE) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(IF)
    he will surely take me to himself.(IG)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(IH) with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.(II)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(IJ)
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(IK)
    who will never again see the light(IL) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(IM)
    are like the beasts that perish.(IN)

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(IO)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(IP)
From Zion,(IQ) perfect in beauty,(IR)
    God shines forth.(IS)
Our God comes(IT)
    and will not be silent;(IU)
a fire devours(IV) before him,(IW)
    and around him a tempest(IX) rages.
He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,(IY) that he may judge his people:(IZ)
“Gather to me this consecrated people,(JA)
    who made a covenant(JB) with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim(JC) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.[x][y](JD)

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify(JE) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.(JF)
I bring no charges(JG) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,(JH) which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull(JI) from your stall
    or of goats(JJ) from your pens,(JK)
10 for every animal of the forest(JL) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.(JM)
11 I know every bird(JN) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields(JO) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world(JP) is mine, and all that is in it.(JQ)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(JR) to God,
    fulfill your vows(JS) to the Most High,(JT)
15 and call(JU) on me in the day of trouble;(JV)
    I will deliver(JW) you, and you will honor(JX) me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant(JY) on your lips?(JZ)
17 You hate(KA) my instruction
    and cast my words behind(KB) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(KC) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.(KD)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.(KE)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(KF)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(KG)
    you thought I was exactly[z] like you.
But I now arraign(KH) you
    and set my accusations(KI) before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,(KJ)
    or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:(KK)
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
    and to the blameless[aa] I will show my salvation.(KL)
